Backcountry Skiing in Incredible GUDAURI & KAZBEGI - Guidebook, Printed, ON SALE.
"Backcountry Skiing in Gudauri & Kazbegi" is part of the Still Wild Georgia series - a project that grew naturally from many winters spent exploring these mountains. Gudauri and Kazbegi were among the first regions where the author began documenting routes, and over the years they have become places he returns to again and again - sometimes for work, sometimes simply because the mountains there feel like old friends.
As the geography of the routes expanded beyond Gudauri and Kazbegi - into other regions of Georgia and then into completely different mountain ranges such as the Himalayas - the original idea of "Still Wild Georgia" naturally grew into a wider project: Still Wild Lines. Georgia, however, remains the heart of this work.
This guidebook focuses on the Gudauri and Kazbegi area of the Greater Caucasus and brings together routes of different character and difficulty: easy lift-accessed lines for quiet powder days, longer ridges and bowls that require close attention to conditions, and multi-day journeys where you find yourself alone with the mountains and the rhythm of your own pace. The goal is to describe these routes clearly and conservatively so that riders with experience and good judgment can enjoy them as safely as possible.
Inside you will find:- Detailed descriptions of ski touring and splitboarding routes around Gudauri and Kazbegi
- Elevation gain, key waypoints and practical access notes
- Terrain information to support avalanche risk assessment
- Variants for different conditions and snow stability
- Suggestions for multi-day link-ups and hut or guesthouse based touring
- Local context on culture, mountains and seasons in this part of Georgia
Some routes carry the traditional names of nearby peaks or villages. Others earned their names from small stories or impressions that appeared on long approaches. Each route includes a QR code with a GPS track. It is meant as an aid, not a replacement for your own navigation, decision making and mountain sense.
When choosing a line, three things matter most in this book: quality of the freeride, beauty of the route and safety. All three are equally important. For this reason you will not find routes that require climbing steep ice walls just for the sake of a descent, and you will not find descents steeper than about 45 degrees. The focus here is on quality skiing and riding in wild terrain, with a reasonable safety margin.
If you are looking for a serious, rider-focused guide to backcountry skiing and splitboarding in Gudauri and Kazbegi, this book is written for you.
